  Laboratory for local probe microscopy


Local Probe Microcopy offers with unprecedented detail atomic and orbital resolution of surfaces and atomic/molecular adsorbates on top of it. It also is unique in the manipulation capabilities, which allows the individual positioning of single atoms and molecules to create man-designed structures. During the last years a large variety of spectroscopic methods have been also been developed, allowing us to investigate electronic, vibrational, optical, or magnetic properties of surfaces and adsorbates with sub-nanometer resolution.


Scanning Probe techniques have also been applied to various environmental conditions. Surface physics and chemistry studies required extremely clean surfaces. This requirement is fulfilled by working at ultra-high vacuum (UHV) conditions. Chemistry and electrochemistry exploit these techniques in a liquid environment, whereas biology.
