Welcome to MFS2017

On behalf of the Spanish and Portuguese Societies of Microscopy, we have the pleasure to announce their 5th Joint Congress "Microscopy at the Frontiers of Science 2017", which will be held in Zaragoza (Spain) from the 5th to 8th September 2017 at the Paraninfo of the Universidad de Zaragoza.

The main goals of the "MICROSCOPY AT THE FRONTIERS OF SCIENCE 2017" is to present and discuss the state of art and the potential of Microscopy and Microanalysis techniques in research areas such as materials and life sciences, biomaterials, geology, heritage and archaeology, forensic sciences and industrial quality and innovation.

Conference Venue

The conference will be held at the Paraninfo of the University of Zaragoza.

Former Faculty of Sciences and Medicine, nowadays it features, among others: An exhibition hall, one of the main University libraries, and the Museum of Natural Sciences of Zaragoza.

Micrograph Competition

This competition rewards the innovative blending of art and science. Winning micrographs will be selected on the basis of artistic merit and general audience appeal. Call for Papers brochure. A maximum of three (3) awards will be presented; First Prize: 200€; Two Second Prizes: 100€ each.

Criteria

  1. All types of microscopy measurements from you own research is accepted.
  2. The jury will not asses the scientific impact of your research but the technical quality and/or the beauty of the image.

Rules

  1. An individual may submit a maximum of two (2) entries (one award per entrant).
  2. The images sent must have at least 1024 pixels (large side), TIFF format. Please make sure that you have a copy of the photo for printing in case you are a winner at a larger scale (minimum 2000 pixels small side) and at least 240 dpi.
  3. The images must not have a signature, a border or any other specific signs.
  4. Each entry must have a separate text sheet with the title and a 200-word (max) description of the image, including the technique and its scientific significance. Text is recommended to be printed in 14-pt Times New Roman font on a separate 8½" x 11" sheet. Entrant's name, address, employer/institution, email address, and image title shall be posted on the back of the mounted entry(ies).
  5. Entries must be brought to the meeting in Zaragoza and mounted on the display boards by 19:00 on Tuesday, September 5th, 2017.
  6. All entries must be removed Friday September 8th morning by 11:30 AM. Micrographs remaining after that time will be discarded.
  7. Winners will be announced at the meeting during the Thursday afternoon. Submitted micrographs remain the property of the entrants subject to the conditions above.
  8. Images uses and copyright: Each participant retains ownership of all intellectual and industrial property rights in and to the information submitted to Sociedad Española de Microscopia as part of the Microscopy Image Contest 2017 that the participant had before submitting it. As a condition of applying to the Microscopy Image Contest 2017, the participant grants Sociedad Española de Microscopia a perpetual, transferrable, irrevocable, worldwide, royalty-free, and non-exclusive license to use, reproduce, adapt, modify, publish, distribute, and publicly display any image that the participant submits as part of this contest for any purpose.

Pre-Congress Workshop

Important information:

  • - The Pre-congress Workshop will be held at the Laboratorio de Microscopías Avanzadas (LMA) del Instituto de Nanociencia de Aragón.
  • - The Pre-congress Workshop will take place Tuesday September 5th.
  • - The workshop will be offered to students, postdocs, technicians and researchers.
  • - Attendance will be limited to 20 participants and a minimum of 6 participants is required.
  • - Registration fee: 50 € (lunch and coffee-breaks are included). In the following days, the registration will be opened. Please check in this website for further information. Next week a dedicated website will be created for this event.
  • - Some grants will be offered for students. These grants will cover the registration fee.
  • - The four lectures in the morning are common for all the participants. In the afternoon, the participants will choose 2 practical courses (1h30 each). The selection of these two practical courses should be done at the moment of the registration in the website. Depending the different selected options of the participants, we will dispatch them into the different courses.

Abstract submission

Two-page abstracts that include specific results and conclusions to allow a scientific assessment of proposed oral presentation or poster are invited. Abstracts should be submitted electronically.

Editing the abstracts is possible after submission until the submission deadline.
